Tax Saving Tips

There are many things to remember if you want to save some extra money on your taxes this year. Remember that there are many credits and deductions that apply to you that you may not be aware of. Many people neglect to claim all of the deductions that they should ideally receive, and would much rather claim the standard deduction than find other available deductions themselves. Remember that most business expenses can be claimed as deductions, so remember to keep your receipts for this reason. Be sure to take all of the tax credits that are available to you, too, as for each child you have that is under the age of 17, up to a $1000 tax credit is available. Be sure to claim all of the deductions and credits you can before filing your return.

Tax Deduction Tips

There are many deductions that can be claimed for many expenses that you may not have been aware of as deductible. For example, you may deduct itemized expenses that relate to job seeking, which include printing of resumes and mileage accumulated driving to and from interviews. In the latter, a deduction can be made of 44.5 cents per mile driven to and from interviews. That may not seem like much, but unless you drive a Hummer it easily covers the cost of gas.

Other deductions can be made as business expenses will include the same 44.5 cent per mile deduction should you use your car for business. The cost of going to and from work, however, is not deductible. Another example would be costs incurred during work-related recreation, such as company picnics or other events of this nature.

Tax Return Tips

When preparing and filing your tax return, the first tip I can offer is to get organized. Make sure you have correct and current information regarding any changes in tax law. Be sure to have your current W-2 forms handy to report your wages. Be sure to compare how filing under different statuses can drastically affect how much you will finally pay in taxes. It is also wise to find all of the deductions that you can, and compare them to the standard deduction in order to receive the highest deduction possible. Filing your tax return can be a stressful time, so it is important to remember that there are always people who have made it their job to help people file their tax returns, and they are always there to help.
